Convince employees they can trust you

Fluctuation is often a direct result of poor relations between employees and their immediate superior. At the same time, it is difficult to understand what leads to a strong relationship between managers and staff. However, there are several ways any leader can build trust in their team.

Consistent behaviour

No one wants to deal with a person without knowing how they will react to the same situation on another day or with another person. Of course, there will be different levels of resolution for similar situations, but you don't want anyone to feel positively or negatively excluded. It's all about equivalence in your responsibilities as a supervisor.

Being available

It is important for employees to know that you are there as a supervisor when they need you. Regular face-to-face meetings are excellent for providing feedback, listening to ideas, dealing with potential concerns and addressing issues that have arisen. This should be a time devoted to employees; let them know they are your priority.

Answer and feedback

No matter how employees communicate with you, it is important you don't forget to respond to their needs, whether this involves supplying an answer to a question you initially did not know the answer to, or a decision you needed time to think about. Even just a quick e-mail or a short phone call to let the person know you are working on a response will help maintain your credibility.

Pro-activity

Anticipate questions and concerns your staff may have before speaking out. Talk to employees about how you can better support them in their positions to make their work easier. Be sure to ask for feedback on your approach so you can learn how to help people do their job better. This open line of communication will ensure your employees feel safer.

A high level of trust between supervisor and employee not only leads to a better relationship, but often means employees are more motivated and satisfied in their positions.
