Choose a suitable theme and format

Once you decide to start recording podcasts, the first task is to select a topic or angle of the presentation. You may want to discuss the latest topics, news, and industry tips, or interview interesting guests from a certain field. Give your medium a relevant name that will engage potential listeners and give them a simple and clear idea of its focus.

Next, decide what format your new medium should take. Do you want to have only conversations, talk solo or work with another moderator, such as, for example, a colleague from your company? The beauty of solo recording is that you can start working on a podcast whenever you want. The guest interview format is more difficult to organise but easier in terms of the content, which is provided primarily by the guest.

In the role of a podcast guest, you can practise the improvised speaking skills required for job interviews, use the opportunity to showcase your expertise or promote your business.

Preparation

In the case of conversations, choose guests with interesting stories or ideas to share. Let them know in advance what topic or perspective you want to discuss. Request bio or other basic information. Confirm the date and time of the event in advance, along with other instructions, so that your guest can prepare well and avoid misunderstandings. It is also a good idea to communicate any expectations of how much time you'll need and how you'll be recording.

In terms of equipment, a podcast can be easily recorded on a digital recorder, mobile device or computer. You don't have to go directly to the studio or buy expensive equipment. However, for the best possible sound, it is better to have a USB microphone and headphones. If possible, do not use the microphone and speakers built into your computer. The microphone may pick up fan noise from the computer, while the sound from the speakers can also return to the microphone.

To ensure a smooth podcast conversation outside a professional studio, turn off other devices and disconnect any computer interruptions, such as Internet cards or e-mail notifications. Perform an audio check to ensure sound passing through the microphone is being recorded.
