Seven non-verbal signals that managers should avoid

A good manager should appear competent and confident. At the same time they must be capable of effective communication and empathy. Being a good manager, or becoming one, requires sending out the right non-verbal signals to show those around you that you are the right person in the right place. This article will therefore look at seven non-verbal signals which you as a manager should not emit.

Slouching

According to Entrepreneur.com, slouching, bad posture and generally trying to be visually as small as possible all suggest a person who is short on confidence and would rather not be where they actually are.

Nervous gestures

Foot tapping, rubbing hands, touching the face: all these things indicate a nervousness that will definitely undermine any vision you are trying to convey to others.

Exaggerated gestures

Exaggerated gestures have a similar effect to nervous gestures. If, for instance, you focus too much on the firmness of your grip when shaking hands and are trying desperately to look confident, paradoxically you will come across as someone who is afraid of people seeing through them and realising they are not what they would like to be.

Not paying attention

When showing empathy and communicating effectively, it is essential you always pay full attention to the person you are talking to at any given time.

Not keeping eye contact

In non-verbal communication, failure to maintain eye contact shows a lack of confidence, fear or an attempt to hide something.

Being too close

Different situations require different distance between participants in the dialogue. Do not try to be too close to people with whom you have a professional relationship. This would seem odd and even aggressive.

No smile

Smiling indicates kindness and confidence. Someone who is smiling is usually neither fearful nor nervous. Smile at people you are talking to and you will appear more trustworthy.
