Body language of successful leaders: exuding confidence through non-verbal communication

As we all likely know (or at least suspect), up to 80% of all communication between two people is non-verbal. In other words, what we say accounts for only 20% of the message conveyed; the rest is largely communicated unconsciously through body language. If you aspire to be a successful manager and leader, you should learn to project confidence, assurance and authenticity through nonverbal signals. Here are a few tips on how to achieve this.

Adjust body language based on the audience

Using similar gestures, posture and non-verbal communication to your counterpart subconsciously signals that you belong to the same group. You can also employ deliberate mirroring, i.e. consciously replicating the positions and gestures of the other person, such as resting your chin on your hand if they do so.

Use dynamic body language

Your body language should reinforce the emphasis of your statements. The dynamics of your non-verbal communication should align with the importance of your message. For instance, when delivering a key piece of information that you want the other party to remember, your gestures should be the most assertive.

Emphasise the meaning of your words

You can enhance the authenticity of your words by reinforcing their meaning with gestures. Your body language and spoken words should not be misaligned because this might create distrust among those around you. Ensure that your gestures align with what you are saying.

Project openness, sincerity, and confidence

Do you want to appear friendly, open and confident? Then body language is your greatest ally. Stand or sit firmly with an open posture towards the person you are speaking with. Avoid tapping your fingers or feet, shifting your gaze around the room, or displaying nervous movements. Maintain eye contact to convey healthy self-confidence and reassure those around you that they can trust you.
