Managers must be able to communicate a vision to the team. How to do it?

One of the main things any manager has to be able to do is convey a strategic plan to their team and offer a vision which the team as a whole can work towards. The ability to communicate such a vision effectively is key to ensuring the team pulls together and everybody is motivated to move forward towards that goal. Here are some tips for managers on effective communication of their vision to the team.

Be concise

As stated in an article in the online magazine Business Matters, the vision should not be complicated. If you have to spend more than a couple of minutes explaining what you have prepared for the team, that is already too long. Your definition of the team's vision needs to be short, brief, powerful and completely clear.

Use stories

Everyone likes to hear stories. This is because they can relate to them. Stories also help people understand the structure and main ideas even within complex problems. When you communicate your vision to the team, use your imagination and utilise a simple story to describe where the team needs to go.

Build on the company values

Your company will definitely have some core values. These are manifested in the culture and employer brand of that company. Use these company values and base your team's vision on them.

Serve as a role model

Whatever your plans for the team, the best way to motivate your subordinates to commit to your vision is to lead by example. Define what you want your subordinates to do, but at the same time make sure above all that you yourself are fulfilling the vision and the plans.
