Toxic traits in subordinates which you should try to combat

As team managers, it is your job to try to create a comfortable working environment that allows all team members to be as productive as possible. Occasionally, however, there will be some subordinates who exhibit characteristics that disrupt the well-being and healthy atmosphere of the team. What are some of the signs and toxic behaviours you should look out for in your subordinates and always try to combat?

Badmouthing and spreading negative thoughts

As INC.com states, a subordinate who spreads gossip behind the backs of colleagues or creates a negative atmosphere can divide the entire team. Address such behaviour openly and encourage a culture of direct communication.

Passive aggression

Covert forms of resistance, such as sarcasm or ignoring the instructions of superiors, can lower team morale and undermine productivity. It is important to name the problem and set clear rules.

Unwillingness to cooperate

Individuals who refuse to work as part of a team can frustrate others. Encourage mutual cooperation, assign subordinates projects that force them to communicate with one another, and set clear and understandable communication principles.

Not admitting mistakes

Someone refusing to take responsibility for their own mistakes erodes the culture of trust and learning. Set an example and show that admitting a mistake is the first step to learning from it.

Questioning authority

Questioning your leadership or ignoring your instructions can easily lead to demotivation of the whole team. While some discussion is healthy, you need to have clear boundaries and must not tolerate someone who questions your authority and crosses certain limits.
